The flowers of Adam’s Courage Clematis really are something to appreciate. As a reblooming clematis, Adam’s Courage produces flowers that can change depending on the time of year. In early summer, the blooms tend to be lavender to purple, whereas later in the season they can be more of a deep violet. Either way, this clematis is ideal for adding some color and height to your garden.
Blooming on both old and new wood means this clematis repeatedly flowers all season long. Growing to around 5 to 6 feet tall, Adam’s Courage is perfect for growing in a border or a larger patio container where it can be enjoyed. Use a trellis, fence or obelisk for it to scramble over. A new introduction for 2023, Adam’s Courage was developed at Donahue’s Greenhouse, a clematis specialist in Minnesota.
Adam’s Courage Clematis Care
For the best blooms, Adam’s Courage Clematis should be grown with its flowers and foliage in full sun and its root in the shade. It prefers fertile, loamy soil that is deep and kept moist, but is also free draining. Frequent watering is necessary to keep the soil moist, but not overly wet, which clematis does not tolerate. To ensure a healthy supply of nutrients, you can apply a mulch of organic matter and a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring.
The Adam’s Courage Clematis is a group 2 clematis. In early spring, simply trim off any deadwood and tie in the new shoots as they develop.
Adam’s Courage Clematis Spacing
When established, Adam’s Courage Clematis can reach a height and spread of 5 to 6 feet by 2 to 3 feet. A spacing of at least 2 to 3 feet between plants is advisable to allow this clematis space to grow and not compete with other plants.
