The Afterglow Weigela is an ornamental shrub that creates an inviting atmosphere in an outdoor space. The arching, upright branches are covered in dark foliage that comes to a sudden point. In the spring, the branches are dotted with clusters of long tubular pink and cream-colored flowers that provide an intense contrast against the leaves. This long-blooming perennial will put on a lovely floral display, and the brilliant foliage will continue to add color after the flowers fade.
This upright, mounded plant is prized for the dark foliage and beautiful flowers. Plant in a bed, border, or mass planting in need of some bold color. At 3 to 4 feet tall, this shrub is a good choice as a foundation planting. The Afterglow Weigela creates a welcoming environment for butterflies and birds, including hummingbirds. Grow this low-maintenance and hardy plant as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 7.
Afterglow Weigela Care
Weigela plants need moist soil that is well-draining and moderately acidic to slightly alkaline. Water weekly for the first year, but established plants only need to be watered during an extended dry period. Plant in full sun so this shrub will receive at least 6 hours of light. In early spring, feed this perennial using balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Top-dress the soil with organic mulch to provide additional nutrients and keep the soil damp longer.
Remove dead growth in the spring and wait to prune and shape the plant until after the spring blooms fade. Give the plant a rejuvenating trim every few years by removing no more than one-third of the oldest branches.
Afterglow Weigela Spacing
This upright medium-sized shrub will grow 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, naturally maintaining a rounded shape. Plants can be spaced 2 to 3 feet apart to create a border or hedge.
