While the Augusta™ Lavender Heliotrope looks amazing when grown in combination with other plants, this beauty looks great on its own, too. This plant, also known as Heliotropium, blooms in the spring and summer and boasts an abundance of tiny lavender-colored flowers with yellow eyes. Flowers grow in clusters and balance out the lush green foliage. The Heliotrope grows as a perennial in USDA zones 9, 10, and 11.  

Heliotropes are continuous bloomers that are known to attract butterflies and bees. The Heliotrope is normally used as a filler in containers, and while the flowers are small, this mounded, upright plant can grow rather large. This plant also does very well when grown in borders, landscapes, and mass plantings and can be used for cut flowers. The heat-tolerant Heliotrope is native to South America.

Augusta™ Lavender Heliotrope Plant Care

This plant is extremely heat and humidity tolerant, making it a great addition to yards in very diverse climates. At least 4 hours of sunlight is needed daily, although the plant can support 6 or more hours of sunlight exposure. Soil should be rich and loamy and evenly retain moisture. Wait until the top few inches of the soil dry out before watering. Heliotropes prefer soil with a pH of 6.6 – 7.3. Feed Heliotrope in the spring during the initial planting. Landscape plants will benefit from a second feeding about halfway through the growing season. Plants grown in containers will need more frequent feedings.

The plant may look overgrown after several rounds of blooms, and a light trim can help rejuvenate the plant. Do not remove more than ¼ of the plant and feed the plant after pruning to promote new foliage and flowers. The plant is toxic to humans and animals if ingested.

Augusta™ Lavender Heliotrope Plant Spacing

Expect the Augusta™ Lavender Heliotrope to reach 12 to 24 inches in height while covering an area of 24 to 36 inches. This plant grows upright, but when grown in a container, the flowers will gently tumble over the edge of the pot.
