This Illicium parviflorum, also known as Small Anise Tree stays more compact and is better behaved than its predecessors. The golden foliage is scented, smelling of anise. Pretty yellow-green flowers are framed by foliage that doesn’t bleach over the winter. This shrub would be an excellent addition to a woodland themed garden.

This evergreen shrub, originating from the Southern United States is hardy in zones 7-9. Bananappeal is a great plant to use as a specimen for shade gardens, or in containers. This upright, mounded shrub has a natural rounded shape that adds structure and interest to your garden. A good plant for gardens that may host the occasional deer, as Illicium is deer resistant.

Plant Bananappeal Anise Trees in full shade to part-sun. Water well after planting and until established, and then as needed. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in the spring. It prefers a good loose soil, but will do well in most soil conditions.

After blooming is the best time to prune the Illicium. Remove old wood or diseased stems to open up the shrub for increased air flow. This is also a good time to do any shape pruning.
