Beach Plum, otherwise known as Prunus maritima, is a member of the Rosaceae or Rose family. This woody perennial is a gorgeous triple threat producing showy snow-white blooms; verdant foliage that morphs into shades of merlot and marmalade; and diminutive fruit that can be used to make many delectable items including jams, jellies, and wine. This salt-tolerant shrub grows to a maximum height and width of 6 to 7 feet. Beach Plum yields pristine blooms highlighted by prominent golden anthers in the spring months of April and May, which are followed by its harvest of little plums. This shrub brings the beauty of an ocean breeze’s soft touch to any home or yard it graces.  

Beach Plum is the perfect choice for any newbie gardener. Low maintenance, this dense, low-growing, upright, deciduous shrub is drought tolerant and resistant to deer and bunnies. Native to sandy locations on the east coast of the United States, its vigorous root system can be used for deterring beach erosion. Additionally, this pollinators’ dream can grow in a variety of well-drained soils. Hardy and striking, Beach Plum poses minimal problems, while its sweetly perfumed blooms and edible fruit offer maximum appeal. 

Beach Plum Care

Beach Plum thrives in well-draining, loamy/sandy soil. A good target pH range is 6.0 to 7.0. With daily access to direct sunlight and one inch of water per week, this deciduous shrub will do well. Not a heavy feeder, Beach Plum will need to be fertilized only at the time of planting and then as necessary during its first year while it establishes.

A low-maintenance perennial, Beach Plum does not require frequent pruning. To encourage growth and better quality plums, however, pruning once per year before new growth starts is wise. Pruning should be done during this perennial’s dormant phase. Remove interior stems so that light and air can reach all parts of the shrub.

Beach Plum Spacing

Beach Plum works well as part of a hedge row, marking a border, or by itself as a flamboyant specimen in a container. As part of a hedge, plant these hardy deciduous shrubs about 5 feet apart. For potting, choose a large, well-draining container that has a diameter of 16 to 24 inches. Or, if you want to create an orchard in your backyard, space these shrubs 8 feet apart to encourage better production of bountiful, high-quality fruit.
