Carding Mill™ English Rose

Carding Mill™ is an excellent rose to grow for cut flowers or as part of a larger rose-themed garden bed. The exceptionally straight and sturdy stems hold up a fully double, English rose with petals in ombre shades ranging from antique apricot to a creamy yellow. Carding Mill™ has a very heady scent of dusky myrrh and re-blooms reliably later in the summer. This one should be the top choice for smaller gardens that may only have room for one rose.

The disease resistance for Carding Mill™ is high. The semi-glossy foliage remains deep green through the summer, resisting black spot and other fungal issues. The compact growth habit makes it perfect for growing in large planters or as a foundation planting near the front of a house. Shrub Roses also make great low-growing hedges or borders for defining an area. The thorny stems are also helpful in deterring both animals and humans from entering property lines.

Carding Mill™ Rose Care

Plant shrub roses in areas with full to part sun. The soil needs to be moist and well draining. Amending heavy clay soil with compost will help lighten the texture enough to grow these roses. Water your Carding Mill™ well at planting time. Soaking the rootball thoroughly and then adding a mulch of arborist chips or compost will keep the soil moist longer. Roses respond well to drip irrigation or soaker hoses that keep the foliage dry and efficiently water the roots. Allow for one inch of water a week from natural rain or a hose. 

Deadheading roses is the best way to prolong the bloom time. Cut the flower stems back to a set of leaves to keep the shrub’s overall shape mounded and compact. Prune in late winter after all danger of a heavy freeze is over. Remove any damaged or diseased branches from the winter. This is also the time to cut back the overall height by half if needed. Apply fertilizer as the first leaves emerge in spring. A slow-release fertilizer specifically formulated for roses will keep the flowers large and the foliage green.

Carding Mill™ stays a compact 3-4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. When planting as part of a hedge, space plants 30 inches apart, center on center. Container-grown roses will require at least a 16-inch diameter pot.
