Copper Low Bush Honeysuckle is a robust dwarf form of the species with spectacular foliage. New leaves emerge coppery-red in the spring and mature to a glossy bronze green. The highly ornamental pointed leaves turn fiery red in the fall for a blaze of color. It blooms in early summer with panicles of lemon-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. Native to the Northeast, this shrub is highly adaptable to many growing conditions, yet not aggressive or invasive in the landscape.
‘Copper’ is a multibranched, deciduous shrub that adopts a mounding shape and spreads by underground runners. As a dwarf, this bush honeysuckle reaches about 2 – 3 feet tall and 3 – 4 feet wide. The flowers attract butterflies and bumblebees, while deer tend to ignore this shrub. It tolerates drought, urban pollution, and some shade. Use it to grow a low hedge, attract wildlife, stabilize a hillside, or adorn a container.
Copper Low Bush Honeysuckle Care
Copper Low Bush grows well in full sun to part shade, but exhibits the most vibrant foliage color in at least 6 hours of sun per day. It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions including sand and clay, although it prefers rich loam. It is not particular about soil pH. Water it regularly over the first growing system to establish a strong root system. It will become drought tolerant over time.
This shrub responds well to thinning of older branches. Cut up to one-third of stems to the ground in late winter when the risk of hard frost has passed.
Copper Low Bush Honeysuckle Spacing
Space these shrubs approximately 3 feet apart, center on center, to create a solid hedge. Grow them in containers at least 24 inches in diameter to accommodate the spreading root system.
