Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) produces rich dark lavender flowers that bloom throughout the summer. This plant unexpectedly grew next to its parent, Lavender Chiffon®, and has been propagated ever since.
This Rose of Sharon is heat, drought and salt tolerant. Deer do not like it, but butterflies and hummingbirds do. It is deciduous, which means it loses its leaves every winter. In a container, it is an upright thriller. However, Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon requires a very large container. It can be used as a specimen, border plant, screening, mass planting, or in the landscape. Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is native to Asia, from China to India.
Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Care
The plant grows in USDA zones 5b-9b and requires full sunlight to grow. It should be fertilized with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs each spring. Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon doesn’t tolerate really wet or very dry soil. It prefers medium moisture and well drained soil.
You can prune the Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon in the spring and that will make it branch out and grow more flowers. You can also prune it to be a small tree. Either way, it produces little or no seeds, so you do not have to worry about it taking over the flowerbed or landscape.
Dark Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Spacing
This large shrub grows to be 8-12 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide. Make sure you allow for the mature size of the shrub when making decisions for its placement. Allow a spacing of 6-10 feet between the shrub and a house, sidewalk, or other plants.
