Elevate the look of your landscape by introducing Cordyline pumilio x banksia or Design-A-Line™ Cordyline. This ornamental grass boasts long blades of burgundy-red foliage that will add drama and color to your yard. The center leaves grow upright, and the outer leaves gently arch outward, creating a spray of colorful foliage. The foliage truly is a showstopper, but tiny white blooms emerge during the summer and provide a sharp contrast against the deep red leaves.
The low-maintenance Cordyline makes a stunning addition to borders, mixed garden beds, mass plantings, and containers. The plant has a rounded, clumping appearance, and it’s an evergreen, so it will provide year-round color and help brighten up a winter landscape. The Design-A-Line™ Cordyline is disease-resistant for peace of mind, and it’s also deer-resistant so that it can thrive despite nuisance deer. This plant is a perennial in USDA zones 8 through 11.
Design-A-Line™ Cordyline Plant Care
Newly planted Cordyline will need water when the top several inches of the soil dry out, generally a couple of times a week. Once established, this plant will not require water regularly, but keep an eye on the plant and the weather and water during an extended dry spell. Place the plant in an area that receives part sun to part shade. Use rich, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0 – 6.5.
Feed the plant using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy, lush foliage during the early spring. Pruning is unnecessary, but trim back any damaged growth in the spring.
Design-A-Line™ Cordyline Plant Spacing
This dwarf variety should reach 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide once mature. Space the plants as close as 1.5 feet apart to create the appearance of a large cluster planting or a border. Spread the plants at least 3 feet apart to display their natural look.
