Butter Pecan Coneflower is a fantastic introduction to the Double Coded™ Series. The fully double flowers start a rich golden yellow, which matures to a pastel yellow. The long-lasting flowers are a must for adding to a pollinator garden or the edges of a rain garden. The sturdy and compact size of the Double Coded™ series seldomly needs staking, and withstands wind and rain marvelously.
Double Coded™ Coneflowers grow equally well in a garden bed and container and are great for small decks and patios. Pair this luscious yellow with other hot-colored perennials for a late-summer container with attitude. The deep green foliage will set off colorful plants such as coral bells and salvia and will last well into the fall. Coneflowers are resistant to deer browsing and slug and snail damage. The root systems are highly drought resistant and can grow in locations with poor nutrition, such as new housing developments.
Double Coded™ Butter Pecan Coneflower Care
Plant coneflowers in a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Amend heavy clay soil with compost to lighten the texture and improve drainage. Use a mulch of organic material to conserve moisture in the soil and gradually feed the root system as the material decomposes. Apply this mulch in the spring as the new growth is sprouting. Water the plants well during the first season, allowing one inch of water per week. Water deeply approximately 2-3 times a week. This will force the roots to grow deeper in the ground and be more drought tolerant.
Coneflowers are herbaceous perennials that go into a state of dormancy for the winter. The top growth dies back all the way to the ground, and new growth emerges from growing points under the soil in the early spring. Deadheading and pruning are not typically needed for Echinacea during the growing season. You can tidy up the spent top growth in the spring. The spent growth protects and insulates the growing points, and the seedheads feed wildlife in the garden during the winter.
Double Coded™ Butter Pecan Coneflower Spacing
The sturdy and solid shape of Butter Pecan has a mature height of 18-20 inches and a width of 16-18 inches. Space plants so that adequate air circulation is available. A spacing of 18 inches between plants is ideal when planting into a garden bed. Grow coneflowers in a container with a diameter of at least 12 inches and a capacity of more than 2 gallons to give their deep taproots room to spread.
