Looking to add some pollinator-friendly color to the back of a garden? The Jeanna native phlox, also known as Jeanna garden phlox, features sweetly-scented lavender-pink flowers that are a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds. The small flowers appear in large tiered clusters atop erect, stiff stems. Unlike some phlox cultivars, this native phlox has a strong mildew resistance, so leaves are more likely to remain more attractive throughout the growing season.
The plant stems are stiff and this phlox grows up to five feet tall. This erect habit makes the Jeanna a great option to group at the back of a garden behind smaller, mounding plants. The flowers are a welcome addition to cut flower bouquets. As a native, pollinator-friendly, and drought-tolerant plant, the Jeana native phlox easily finds a place in nature-wise landscaping.
Jeana Native Phlox Care
The Jeanna native phlox prefers a site with full sun or light shade. Plants in deeper shade will have smaller flowers and weaker stems. The ideal soil is moderately fertile with medium moisture and good drainage. Once established, this phlox is fairly drought tolerant, so following the period of establishment you will only need to check on it during extended dry spells. Deer find this plant attractive, so it may need protection from these critters if it is the most appealing plant in the area.
Remove spent flowers as they die to ensure maximum blooming throughout the July through September bloom season. After flowering is over in the fall, cut back stems to just above ground level.
Jeana Native Phlox Spacing
The Jeana garden phlox reaches a height of four to five feet with a spread of two to three feet. Give each plant 18 inches of space on all sides. If the plant gets crowded, you can dig up a clump and divide it every three years in spring or fall.
