The award-winning Lo and Behold Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x ‘Blue Chip Jr.’) is a pretty dwarf shrub that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to its cone-shaped flower heads. It also is drought tolerant, so you can enjoy its color, small shape and pollinator attraction with less water use than other shrubs. In spring, silver-green leaves begin to appear and by summer, the pretty bluish-purple blossoms open. Because it is a miniature buddleia, Blue Chip can fill in nearly anywhere in your landscape, especially if you want to enjoy butterflies and hummingbirds from your deck or patio.
The fragrant flowers of Lo and Behold Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush continues to appear throughout summer and remains open longer than those of many other plants. The tiny shrub grows to no more than 2.5 feet tall and wide, making it a versatile plant for garden beds or as container thrillers. Because it grows so low to the ground, it also is a perfect choice for erosion control. Plant the butterfly bush on a slanted hill or terrace to help slow water drainage. Like all buddleias, it complements other drought-tolerant shrubs with yellow or orange blooms.
Lo and Behold Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush Care
Lo and Behold Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush needs full sun (at least 6 hours a day) and can take heat up to zone 9. It also is cold hardy down to zone 5. Be sure to choose soil that drains well to help keep the roots from staying soggy when cold temperatures arrive. You only need to prune it once a year, as soon as you see new leaves forming near the base. Prune the plant back to nearly ground level and watch it grow. Don’t overwater this drought-tolerant plant, especially as the weather cools.
Lo and Behold Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush Spacing
Place one Lo and Behold Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush before a large rock, boulder or structure as a featured plant or put several along a path for a fragrant hummingbird border. If you want a mass or border planting, space these dwarf buddleias 1.5 to 2.5 feet apart, measuring plant center to center.
Interesting Fact – This plant is sometimes called “summer lilac” instead of a “butterfly bush.”
