African Lily, Lily of the Nile…these are just a few nicknames for this unique perennial flower. Bright violet to lilac buds appear in clusters atop of long scapes, and burst into bloom, sporting a lavender and blue striped 6 petaled flower on each stem with prominent anthers similar to that of an azalea. Variegated yellow and green strappy leaves provide a cool contrast to the bright flowers. Growing in part sun to full sun, and requiring at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight a day for best flowering performance, Agapanthus ‘Neverland’ will steal a spot in your heart when you give it a place in your perennial garden bed or landscape border. Agapanthus africanus is native to South Africa where it grows along the sea coast in full sun. ‘Neverland’ is hardy in Zones 8 to 11, needing warm winter temperatures to survive. Southern gardeners will enjoy the allium like flower clusters that open and last for weeks. These lovely perennials grow on stiff stalks, making them an excellent cut flower for floral arrangements. Coastal gardeners will enjoy the salt tolerance, but will have to amend sandy soil with additional nutrients as these are heavy feeders. Heat and humidity tolerant, they will bloom throughout the hot summer season into the fall. They are drought resistant once established but respond best to regular precipitation or regular watering schedule.

Neverland Agapanthus Care

‘Neverland’ is a perennial that is easy to care for. It spreads via an underground rhizome and creates compact clumps. It prefers a well draining acidic soil that is rich with organic matter and needs to be fertilized yearly with a balanced fertilizer. Well rotted leaf matter or peat moss will provide an acidic environment for them. Depending on climate conditions, it needs to be on a regular watering schedule, maintaining an evenly moist soil. Plant your new plant about 1 to 2 inches above soil level and fill in around the plant with mulch, but not touching the stem. Water deeply and often until established. Plant them in full to partial sun, with some afternoon shade being provided in hot sun regions.

Deadheading agapanthus is not needed, but you can remove spent flower heads by clipping the stem down to the base foliage. This will halt any seed production and prolong the bloom season. New stems with flower clusters will appear throughout the growing season. Pruning is not needed unless there are dead or yellowing stems after dormancy. Clip these down to the ground to maintain a healthy happy plant. Divide your plant every three years, making sure to get some good roots in each division.

Neverland Agapanthus Spacing

Space plants about 24 inches apart. Agapanthus is a smaller variety, growing just 24 inches tall and spreading out 24 inches wide.
