Onion Chives are a hardy perennial herb that is easy to grow, easy to use, and plentiful in its harvest. New plants are ready for harvest within 80-90 days, but established plants will be ready much sooner. Chives are easy to utilize in the kitchen; add them to soups, salads, potatoes, spreads, eggs, and any dish you would like to add the crisp onion flavor to. This variety has green tubular leaves and lovely purple flowers that are also edible. The upright habit and purple flowers make chives a must-have addition to the edible garden, and makes it a great choice for borders and flower gardens, as well.

Onion Chives Plant Care

With very little care, chives onion reward herb gardeners with a bounty of flavorful leaves in summer. Growing Onion Chives Plants

It takes chives 80-90 days to reach maturity from seed. However, they are perennials in Zones 3-10, so after your initial growing season, it will take much less time to reach harvest time. Chives need 8-10” space from other plants in order to have enough room to grow. They need full sun and consistent moisture for ideal growing conditions. Chives onion can reach up to 12” in height. Start them indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost date, and then transplant into the garden after the danger of a hard frost has passed.

Chives are great for containers, landscapes, herb gardens, and borders. A single plant can grow happily in a small container, or in a large container with companions. The upright habit and lavender purple flowers make them a perky addition to herb kitchen gardens, borders, and containers.

Keep the soil around the chives onion evenly moist, but not overly saturated. Additional irrigation may be required during dry spells.

Use compost to feed your garden bed in early spring. Chives are low-care perennials that don’t require consistent fertilizing, so an application of compost should be enough to keep them vigorous.
