Paul’s Glory Hosta American is an easy-going perennial with large attractive leaves that change color over the summer. The leaves emerge blue-green in spring with a chartreuse center. In mid-summer, the centers lighten to cream, while the margins darken to forest green. The leaves dry out in the fall, giving it a lovely golden color, in contrast to most hostas that seem to “melt” by first frost. Clusters of pale lavender flowers are held on tall scapes. This beauty was selected by the American Hosta Growers Association as the Hosta of the Year in 1999.
This large hosta will spread to 55 inches and reach a height of 25 inches. It is very cold hardy down to zone 3. The trumpet-shaped flowers are adored by hummingbirds and bees. This hosta is more slug resistant than other varieties, although no variety is completely immune. Consider planting it along a woodland path, in groupings for an eye-catching display in the shade, or in containers.
Paul’s Glory Hosta Care
This hosta grows in part sun to full shade, and appreciates afternoon shade in hot climates. It prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil, regardless of pH level. Water it weekly in the summers and more frequently during hot, dry spells. Apply a well-balanced fertilizer in the spring, or top-dress around the base of the plant with well-decomposed compost.
The foliage will die back in the fall as the hosta goes dormant. Cut back the spent foliage anytime before spring. As the clump expands over several years, you can divide it in the spring or fall and transplant the divisions to other garden areas.
Paul’s Glory Hosta Spacing
Space Paul’s Glory approximately 4 feet apart on center for mass planting. This hosta also looks spectacular in containers, which must be at least 18 inches in diameter to accommodate its large root system.
