Pugster Pinker Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) packs a mass of full-size pink flowers onto a compact plant. This new addition to the world of dwarf butterfly bushes also is packed with plenty of features to love, including its diminutive size of 24 inches high and up to 30 inches around. The common name for Buddleia says all you need to know about butterflies flocking to the fragrant, cone-shaped flower clusters. It also attracts bees throughout its long flowering season of summer through fall and resists deer and rabbits.
You would think having this many features in one shrub would come with high maintenance. But Pugster Pink, like most butterfly bushes, needs little care. It’s a low-water shrub that thrives in zones 5 through 9, so it can take some winter cold and summer heat. The plant blooms continuously through summer and into fall with no need to remove dead flowers. This short, but full and colorful shrub works for nearly any use in the landscape, as a border to sidewalks, a low edge plant for garden beds, a groundcover or mass planting. It also can fill large containers.
Pugster Pinker Butterfly Bush Care
Pugster Pink will shine best with full sun, at least 6 hours a day. This plant is fairly drought tolerant, and needs soil that drains well so the roots do not succumb to rot. For this reason, do not add anything to the soil when planting and be sure to keep the base of the shrub slightly above the ground.
Avoid overwatering this butterfly bush, and avoid fertilizing. It thrives in average to poor soil. Even though it is a dwarf variety, prune the shrub each spring when new green growth begins to appear. Prune for shape and to encourage new growth by removing dead limbs and pruning most branches down to a few inches above ground level. In cooler climates, it is best to avoid pruning the buddleia in fall.
Pugster Pinker Butterfly Bush Spacing
For borders and mass plantings, space Pugster Pinker Butterfly Bush shrubs about 24 to 30 inches apart from center to center, so they have room to grow.
