The Rebecca Clematis is a stunning plant with features of vibrant red, star shaped blooms. The petals have a texture of soft velvet and each flower can grow as large as 5 to 7 inches. Blooms are lush and abundant all summer. It is unique in that it blooms again in August as if to give a grand finale before it loses its vivid color and green foliage in autumn.
While deer and rabbit refrain, butterflies are Rebecca‘s biggest fan with bees and hummingbirds not far behind. Following along with the same preferences of other clematis plants, Rebecca thrives with the sun on her petals while keeping her roots cool in moderately moist soil. A good way to protect those roots is to plant among low growing plants or rocks for root protection. The most vibrant flower color will result when planted in full sun.
Rebecca Clematis Care
The Rebecca Clematis thrives in various types of soil including clay which can often be brutal to more fragile plants. This beauty is very tolerant to heat and drought and will hold up well in cold temperatures. Keep soil moderately moist but do not over water. Fertilize every 4 to 6 weeks beginning in the spring when buds are approximately 2 inches and continue throughout the season. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer mix search as 5-10-10.
These plants will grow 6 to 8 feet high and approximately 2 feet wide. Be sure to space 36 to 48 inches apart to allow plenty of room for growth. Winter care consists of protecting the roots with a generous supply of mulch. Rebecca clematis is in pruning group 2. It blooms on old growth and this year’s growth (old wood and new wood). Prune in late winter or early spring before new buds begin to form on the stem. Remove all dead leaves to allow for new life to break through.
Rebecca Clematis Spacing
The Rebecca Clematis is, as with most of her relatives, a climber but also works well as a groundcover or border plant. Spacing should be approximately 4 feet apart. Planting depth should ensure that the crown…or where the roots meet the stem…are 1-2 inches below the soil.
