If you’re on a search of adding ultimate beauty to your garden, the Regal Charmaine Clematis is the plant to fit your needs! Staying true to the Latin term which means “with full flower“, the single, semi double and double flowers blossom at the same time, giving a variety of fullness to any space it occupies. Blooming in late spring to early autumn…or June through September, the striking deep red color shows off it’s slightly ruffled edges as it rests among shiny green leaves making it a showstopper for smaller gardens, potting containers or as a vertical climber!
Although often called “the queen of flowering vines” the Regal Charmaine lives well with a simple lifestyle of good soil, moisture, bright sun in their face and shade at the roots. This native of North America and North Western Canada can reach heights of 6-7 feet tall. Sticking with most clematis preferences, the Regal Charmaine also thrives in sun to partial shade…with at least six hours of sun daily. The other common request of the clematis is cool, moist roots. Planting annuals at the base or placing flat stones around them will do the trick. This family of flowers has deep roots so be sure to water well while keeping adequate drainage.
Regal Charmaine Clematis Care
Hummingbirds are attracted to these natural beauties but deer, not so much. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t munch on them if there is nothing else around to eat. The plant is susceptible to fungus so be sure to keep any unhealthy or dying leaves pruned to keep the stalk healthy. Handle this twining vine gently so as not to damage or cause the plant to die. The Regal Clematis thrives on rich soil so feed with a low nitrogen fertilizer of 5-10-10 in spring. Throughout its growing season, continue alternating with 10-10-10 every 4 to 6 weeks.
This clematis vine is in pruning group 2, which means it blooms on old growth and new growth each year. For best results, prune to the lowest, prominent buds during the first early spring after planting. After that, simply prune to personal size and shape preferences. Pruning also encourages an abundance of future blooms. If at any time the plant looks as if it is struggling, cut it back considerably to approximately 18 inches after the first burst of blooms appear. As the weather gets colder, surround roots thoroughly with a blanket of mulch.
Regal Charmaine Clematis Spacing
The spread of the Regal Charmaine can vary as with any vine. Space approximately 3 feet apart when planting…taking note that it will intertwine with bushes, trellises, trees etc. which also makes it perfect for a vertical garden.
