The bold blooms of the Sombrero® Baja Burgundy Coneflower will let you know when summer has arrived. This Echinacea hybrid has a dark chocolate brown cone surrounded by overlapping petals in a bright burgundy hue. Flowers emerge on the top of tall stems reaching 18 to 22 inches tall. Dark green foliage fills in on the lower portions of the stems and provides a nice contrast against the vivid blooms. This upright filler blooms throughout the summer.
This plant is native to North America, so it does not require much care once it settles in. Use this beauty in borders, mass plantings, or containers. The striking blooms make excellent cut flowers, and they dry nicely for use in dried arrangements. The Sombrero® Baja Burgundy Coneflower is drought tolerant and deer resistant, but it attracts pollinators like butterflies. This low-maintenance perennial grows in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Sombrero® Baja Burgundy Coneflower Plant Care
Coneflowers thrive in part to full sun and need at least 4 hours of direct light, but they can handle more. Newly planted Coneflowers need water when the top several inches of the soil dry out. Established plants will not need water under normal conditions, but giving them water during a drought or warm spell can prevent damage. Coneflower plants are not very picky about soil pH and need well-draining soil.
Feed the plant in the spring using a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer to promote new growth. Coneflowers are not heavy feeders, and too much fertilizer or rich soil will make the plant leggy. Remove spent flowers to redirect energy into new growth and encourage more blooms. Some gardeners leave the flowers in place and let them go to seed so the plant can naturally reseed, and more plants will grow with time. Other gardeners leave the seeds as a food source for birds during the fall and winter.
Sombrero® Baja Burgundy Coneflower Plant Spacing
The Sombrero® Baja Burgundy Coneflower is a medium-height plant that will grow 18 to 22 inches tall. It will cover an area of 22 to 24 inches. Space plants 22 to 24 inches to create a dense planting. Coneflowers can be divided in the fall or spring if they have outgrown their space.
