Every plant wants to be a “Posh“ ‘Spice Girl’ viburnum but there is only one. She is incredibly fragrant with her spicy scent drifting across the garden all day and long into the evening! Not only is she fragrant, she is stunning as well, from the early spring when her waxy pink blossoms open to white flowers backlighted by pink petals but her leaves have a texture similar to suede and a burgundy wine red fall color.
Her fragrant blossoms entice pollinators from all over since she is one of the first fragrant flowers to open in the spring. ‘Spice Girl’ is an ideal plant for using as screen, a hedge or as a focal point in the garden. Of course since it is so fragrant, the neighbors might be spending some time in your garden too. They are just jealous. In fact, you can cut a few branches and bring them into the house to perfume the home. Viburnums are native to North America and their cultivars showcase the very best qualities of them. ‘Spice Girl’ is deer, insect and disease resistant. As a deciduous shrub, she loses her leaves in the fall but not before turning a gorgeous red.
Spice Girl Viburnum Care
Pruning Spice Girl Viburnum is not necessary unless trimming off broken or crossed branches. This plant blooms on old wood so you risk cutting off the next year’s flower buds if you do prune at the wrong time. She is a big girl growing 6-7ft. tall and wide. For best growth, plant her in a sunny to part sun, moist, well-draining soil and fertilize with a slow release fertilizer for acid loving plants. If berries are desired for wildlife, plant ‘Spice Girl’ with ‘Spice Baby’ and add even more fragrance to the garden! She is hardy from Zone 4a-8b, making it ideal for planting in the most of the country!
Spice Girl Viburnum Spacing
Since ‘Spice Girl’ is on the tall side, growing 6-7 ft. tall and wide, spacing should be 7-8ft on center between plants if using as a hedge or a screen. You can also use it as a cut flower branch for arrangements.
