Spreading Japanese Plum Yew is a great choice to add some year-round dark green color to a shady area of your yard where it may be difficult to get other plant species to grow. It’s also a good choice for small gardens since its mature height is only between 2 and 3 feet with a 3 to 4-foot spread in an arching mounding shape.
Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘Prostrata’ can be grown in partial sun to shade conditions in USDA planting zones 6 to 9. This low to no maintenance shrub is deer resistant and pollution, heat, shade and drought tolerant. When used as a foundation plant, you’ll never have to worry about it blocking your first-floor window views. Other locations recommended are under tree canopies, as a low hedge along walkways or landscaped areas, mass plantings, specimen plants, rock gardens and containers.
Spreading Japanese Plum Yew Care
A single specimen will produce some fruit, but growing multiple plants is best to take advantage of cross-pollination. Once established, these drought-tolerant plants require very little care or maintenance. Fertilize in early spring or summer if desired. This strikingly attractive plants can be used in flowering shrub borders, containers, home foundation plantings, hedges, wildlife gardens, woodland borders and mass planting. Marvel Mahonia are deer, disease, heat, drought and insect resistant.
Pruning Spreading Japanese Plum Yew can be done annually to maintain a tidy shaped plant or creating a dense hedge. It should be done in late winter or early summer before the new growth emerges from the plant. You can trim dead or sick branches at anytime throughout the year. Only do conservative cutting, especially when the plant is young.
