The Starry Starry Night Hibiscus, also known as the Rose Mallow, has maple leaves so dark they may appear almost fully black in certain lighting. What makes this perennial stand out is its gargantuan 8-inch flowers that are hard to miss, even from a distance. These flowers are not only unique because of their size but also due to their shape. The petals grow in a spiral pattern, with a deep cherry hue in the very center, and a cotton candy shade of pink with white edges throughout the rest of the plant’s petals. Your perennial will grow these amazing flowers around the summertime, and the whole plant may reach a mature height and spread of about 4 feet.
Native to North America, the deciduous Starry Starry Night Hibiscus is deer resistant and fairly resistant to diseases. However, you may need to keep an eye on aphids, mealybugs, and thrips as they can cause harm to your perennial. This plant also has an impressive growth rate, making it capable of adding an entire inch of new growth per day. Requiring a minimal amount of maintenance, you can use these beautiful perennials in beds and borders, bog gardens, patios, containers, cottage gardens, and rain gardens.
Starry Starry Night Hibiscus Plant Care
You should plant your Starry Starry Night Hibiscus between early and mid-summer. Select an area where your perennial can enjoy partial or full sun and dig a hole that allows easy accommodation for the roots without needing to bend them. You can use moist, well-drained soil with a pH ranging from 5.5 to 6.2. After burying, firm the soil around the plant and water it thoroughly. To keep your plant healthy, water it as needed to ensure the soil is never dry but relatively moist. You can feed it every two weeks with a water-soluble fertilizer to encourage vigorous growth.
Although not necessary, you can prune your plant with a hardy pair of loppers to achieve your desired shape and size. You can also eliminate any old stems that died during the winter before the next growth cycle begins.
Starry Starry Night Hibiscus Plant Spacing
To allow for adequate room between your perennials, leave about 42 to 48 inches of space between your plants.
