Remember the song “Dancing Queen”? I believe they were thinking of Summerific ‘Ballet Slippers’ because she is the ballet queen in the garden! ‘Ballet Slippers’ is a large plant so give her some space in the garden to do her swirling dance. The 7 inch ruffled flowers are blushed with pink at the edges with a dark red eye.
‘Ballet Slippers’ is one of those showstoppers in the garden that will have people stopping by your home to ask what plant is that beautiful! Hibiscus is native to North America and attracts a number of pollinators including bees and hummingbirds and is deer resistant as well. She blooms from mid-summer to early fall giving your garden lots of color after many perennials have stopped blooming.
Summerific Ballet Slippers Hibiscus Care
For best results, plant in early spring before the heat begins. Best if planted in a moist but well-draining soil. Apply a heavy layer of mulch for the first winter to help protect again winter damage. The plant also does best in full sun. Water often for more and larger flowers. Cut it back in early spring before the new growth begins and you will be rewarded with multiple branches and more flowers. Just use a pair of loppers to cut the stems. You can even cut them back 2-3 times before July 4th for a mass of flowers or you can just cut in the spring and enjoy. Remember that it is one of the last plants to leaf out so don’t think it is dead. It is hardy from Zone 4a-Zone 9b.
Summerific Ballet Slippers Hibiscus Spacing
Because ‘Ballet Slippers’ is a star (at 4 ft. high) in the garden it is best used as a focal point in the garden or think of using it along a sidewalk as a large border plant. Imagine swirling blooms down a walkway or a driveway.
