Creeping Phlox is the perfect companion groundcover for spring blooming bulbs and perennials. Violet Pinwheels blankets the ground it is planted in with tiny pinwheel shaped flowers of the deepest purple. The color is truly intense and dramatic. The well behaved foliage remains after blooming through the summer.
Violet Pinwheels Creeping Phlox is great as a ground cover in a Cottage garden planting, but really shines in a rock garden where it can really show off its structure. Plant this stunning ground cover at the base of dwarf conifers and Alpine plants or around the edge of a mixed seasonal container to act as the “spiller”.
Violet Pinwheels Creeping Phlox Care
Creeping Phlox are very low maintenance. The ground hugging habit is great at smothering out weeds and keeping the roots of other perennials, such as Clematis, shaded throughout the summer. Plant Creeping Phlox in full to part sun with well drained soil. A neutral pH and average soil texture are fine. Make sure to water Violet Pinwheels regularly while it establishes the first couple of years. Later, when it is mature, this Phlox will be tolerant of dry spells with very little extra irrigation.
Weeding around Violet Pinwheels is very important while it establishes. This is a slower growing, but more dense Creeping Phlox and could be overwhelmed by weeds before it reaches its mature size. Fertilizing should be done early in the spring as the new growth starts. Use a well balanced, slow release feed scratched into the soil. Using drip irrigation or soaker hoses is difficult with Creeping Phlox. An overhead watering through micro sprayers or an oscillating sprinkler is fine.
Violet Pinwheels Creeping Phlox Spacing
Planting Violet Pinwheels as a ground cover will require a spacing of 18 inches on center between plants. This spacing will ensure that the ground is covered fairly quickly.
