From early summer until fall, the Volcano® Lipstick Garden Phlox will erupt with striking red blooms. Each flower features 5 petals that slightly overlap for a continuous look. The flowers are a bold red and have hints of burgundy near the eye where the yellow stamens are visible. This plant is a prolific bloomer that will provide vibrant color all season. The flowers grow on tall stems that have bright green foliage.

This Phlox has an upright growth habit, and the multi-branched plants have a dense structure, creating a full and lush appearance. This cultivar is much more sturdy than other varieties, and it can normally support itself without the need to be staked. Feature this beauty in beds, borders, and containers. The Volcano® Lipstick Garden Phlox grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.

Volcano® Lipstick Garden Phlox Care

Plant Phlox in full to partial sun. Choose a spot with afternoon shade when grown in warm climates. Soil should have high organic content and be moist but well-drained. Water weekly or when the top few inches of soil dry out. Keep the foliage dry when possible by watering the ground around the plant to help stave off mildew.

Apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring to encourage new growth. Trim the plant back in late spring or early summer to maintain a bushy look. Deadhead the plant to maintain a tidy appearance, but the plant will not self-seed if the flowers are removed. Phlox is a clump-forming plant that can benefit from being divided every few years.

Volcano® Lipstick Garden Phlox grows 24 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. This cultivar is resistant to powdery mildew, but it is still best to leave room for air to circulate, so space plants no closer than 24 inches apart.
