- Bring that extra-special touch to your garden with this variegated boxwood that marries beauty and hardiness. Wedding Ring® is unlike plain boxwoods because each lustrous deep green leaf is ringed in a bright lime green early in the season that matures to gold in summer. Truly unique! Wedding Ring® boxwood is no bridezilla either—it is the hardiest of all variegated boxwoods and, like all boxwoods, is deer-resistant.
Attaining a height and spread of just 1-3 feet, Wedding Ring® boxwood makes a great specimen in the garden, either in the border or in a pot. It puts a new spin on traditional boxwood edging with its two-toned foliage when planted as a low hedge. The addition of this plant alone will set your garden apart!
Wedding Ring Boxwood Care
You might think this boxwood would require more care than others, but it’s not the case. Wedding Ring® boxwood is just as cold hardy, vigorous, and fuss-free as other boxwoods that are hardy down to USDA Hardiness Zone 5. Site it in full sun to partial shade (but not deep shade) in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Mulch with a couple inches of shredded bark and keep well-watered the first season. You will need to pay closer attention to watering if you are growing it in a pot as it can dry out faster.
A light sprinkling of granular fertilizer for evergreens in the spring is a good idea. Pruning Wedding Ring Boxwood is not necessary, as this is a very compact plant. You may trim or cut back to shape the plant in the summer though. Cut off dead or sick branches and leaves anytime throughout the year to help the plant look better.
Wedding Ring Boxwood Spacing
With its compact stature and unique, stunning foliage, this boxwood is particularly suited to growing in containers. Plant it in a pot that is at least 14 inches across in good-quality potting soil. Planted in the garden as a hedge or mass, space the plants 12-18 inches apart on center. Allow a little more space if you are planting Wedding Ring® boxwood as a specimen in the border—approximately 18-24 inches from any adjacent plant.
