Wollerton Old Hall English Rose

No other rose impresses like a climbing rose. Wollerton Old Hall has a classic, cupped, fully double flower in the palest apricot that turns a creamy white at the outer petals. This climbing rose is also highly fragrant, smelling of musky myrrh. Wollerton Old Hall was introduced in 2011 and is named after one of the grandest private gardens in Great Britain. 

This rose’s nonstop flowering and tall climbing habit make it perfect for covering the sides of sheds, garages, and other undesirable structures in the garden. Large pergolas and rounded trellis arches will absolutely drip with flowers all summer, attracting any passing pollinators as they go by. The pale pastel color of Wollerton Old Hall is perfect for a cottage garden or in a nighttime garden where the light color will glow alongside other white flowering plants such as Nicotiana, Purity Cosmos, and Casablanca Lilies. 

Wollerton Old Hall English Rose Care

Plant this climbing rose where it will have full sun and a sturdy support to climb on. The soil should be well draining and consistently moist. Incorporate 2-3 inches of organic compost if the soil is heavy or light and sandy. One inch of water a week is needed for the first 1-2 years until the root system has fully established. Apply a granular fertilizer specifically for roses according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Fertilizing climbing roses is best done early in the spring when the first growth emerges. 

Pruning climbing roses is straightforward and no more complicated than pruning shrub roses. The first 2-3 years, allow only 2 or 3 main stems to be the climbing canes. Tie them into the support regularly, guiding them to the final desired shape. In late winter, cut back leggy side shoots from the main canes, allowing 3-4 bud spurs on each side shoot. The overall height can be shortened as needed. Climbing roses do not require deadheading, although cutting any blooms for arranging will accomplish the same end. Cut the stems back to just above a pair of leaves. Rejuvenation pruning can be carried out early in the spring if needed. All the canes can be cut back to within 8-10 inches of the ground to encourage new, more robust growth.
